On this day, 11 December 1981, a death squad backed by the US administration of Ronald Reagan massacred around 1,000 people in El Mozote, El Salvador (content note: sexual violence). Prior to being killed, many of the victims - half of them children - were tortured and girls as young as 10 were raped by the US-trained soldiers. They were fighting against a left-wing insurgency, but the villagers of El Mozote had remained largely neutral.
