On this day, 11 December 1983, three weeks after cruise missiles arrived at Greenham military base in the UK, 50,000 women protested by encircling the base, holding mirrors, symbolically reflecting the military’s image back to itself. Towards the end of the day, women began tearing down large sections of the fence around the facility, and police arrested hundreds.
