On this day, 8 October 1968 Mexican-Catalan revolutionary and Spanish civil war surrealist artist Remedios Varo died in Mexico City. During the Spanish civil war of 1936-9 she moved to Paris to get away from the fighting. Following the Nazi takeover of France, she was interned in a concentration camp. Varo and her partner were rescued and were able to emigrate to Mexico.
