On this day, 29 September 1920, Chilean anarchist poet and Industrial Workers of the World union member, José Domingo Gómez Rojas, died at just 24 years old after having been arrested, tortured, and allegedly gone mad. More than 40,000 people attended his funeral, at which his poem “Protestas de Piedad,” written while in confinement, was read and became a symbol for anarchist and pacifist groups against the oligarchy that dominated the country.
