Godzilla 1990 by Toshihiro Hirano! It was published in the year 1989!

What is it? It’s just a manga adaptation of Godzilla vs. Biollante! 

The story beats are the same with some minor differences. It appears the manga might be based on a late version of the script as flowers blossom after Biollante’s first appearance. The biggest one is Biollante itself. While identical in origin and being a plant/girl/Godzilla hybrid, it clearly looks different than the movie counter part. Additionally, rather than be a large beast that dwarfs Godzilla, it seems to be a really agile creature that runs around and lasts Godzilla with its vines.

The final fight takes place in a big city (I’m presuming it’s Osaka), so the final fight is a little more destructive, with Biollante bouncing around a metropolis (something we unfortunately don’t see in the movie). It has a more clear victor to the fight too: Biollante physically overwhelms and has the advantage. Godzilla clearly has an out, his beam, but due to the actions of Gondo he can’t use the beam and Biollante is the clear victor. Something very similar happens in the movie, but I can’t feel it feels a little less inter connected. Biollante sort of just peaces out in the movie, and it feels more obvious that Godzilla lost from the ANEB and not a combined effort of the ANEB and Biollante. 

Overall, pretty good.
