On this day, 19 September 1893, following two decades of struggle, women in Aotearoa/New Zealand won the right to vote in parliamentary elections. Māori and working class women had played an important role in the women’s suffrage movement, and the right to vote was achieved by all, not just white women or property owners like in some countries.
