I come from a family of cops; how do I counter the 'antifa are violent crazies!' and 'they literally want cops dead!!!!!1' that they inevitably start spouting after a few drinks? I always get the intense urge to put their head through a glass tabletop and inadvertently prove them right.
Hoo-boy, that is a tough one! First off, let’s talk about how to talk to your cop fam. They’re not real likely to listen to you argue with them or accept your challenge to a debate. So like we’ve said before, you should maybe focus on asking open-ended questions, looking for the root of their concerns, and try to unite on shared values.
We wrote about this a bit more extensively a few weeks back when giving another Anon advice about speaking to their QAnon-brainwashed parents, so please have a look at that.
Other things we feel should be pointed out: the movement is called antiFA because it’s short for anti-FASCIST. It’s not called antifCO and it’s not anti-cop per se. Stay with us here as we explain:
Anti-fascism is a broad-based movement of people from all sorts of different backgrounds with all sorts of different and sometimes conflicting political viewpoints and ideologies, united solely by one thing: are hatred for bigotry and fascism and our commitment to taking action against bigotry and fascism. This means that there are some antifa who are not at all anti-cop; there are antifa who are definitely pro-cop/law & order types; and there are probably even a few antifa cops if you ask around.
But (and you know there was going to be a “but,” didn’t you, Anon?): what are the police, including the police in your family, doing to separate themselves from outright fascists, bigots, and white supremacists?
Because the history of policing is rooted in perpetuating slavery and bigotry through violence.
Because there have been far too many examples of police either being active members of white supremacist terror groups or aiding & abetting groups like the KKK to slaughter people in the streets.
Because the police routinely do everything they can to protect and defend white supremacists by attacking their opponents. Like they did in Portland yesterday. Or in LA:
Because the police have very plainly made it clear that they are violently opposed to anti-fascism and in support of fascists. Here’s a partial list of attacks by police on anti-fascists from about 2015-2018 for example.
Because we all have seen more than enough examples of police routinely harassing, assaulting, and killing black people. All the data shows that black people are more likely to be mistreated, harmed, or killed by police. And when people begin a protest movement to address this, the police respond in the most violent manner possible, killing at least one protestor so far and severely injuring if not nearly killing several others.
In the light of all of that, how could anyone opposed to bigotry and fascism not see the police as the most dangerous, violent organization of fascist-supporting racists in society?
More personally for your family: what are they doing in their professional lives as police to address the violent racist abuse that proliferates police culture? We know that 84% of police have seen their fellow cops use excessive force and that 61% of cops wouldn’t turn in a fellow cop who they knew had committed a serious crime. We also know what happens to cops who try to hold other cops accountable. So we don’t expect that they would do very much besides try to explain away or justify any racist abuse that is UNDOUBTEDLY going on in whatever police force they work for.
So good luck we guess, Anon? Who knows, maybe you’ll be able to convince your family to quit and find honest work that helps your community!
