On this day, 15 September 1970, several hundred police in New Orleans, Louisiana, attacked an office in the Desire housing projects associated with the Black Panther Party, opening fire for over 20 minutes on the men, women and children inside the office. The attack came the morning after two probable police informants were uncovered and beaten by local residents. Police fired over 30,000 rounds of ammunition as well as teargas on the headquarters of the National Committee to Combat Fascism, an organisation closely linked with the Panthers. Outside the HQ nearby, three Black people were wounded, and a fourth, a bystander called Kenneth Borden, killed by police. After 20 minutes, those inside surrendered. 12 were subsequently charged with attempted murder but all were acquitted on August 7, 1971.
