
On this day, 20 October 1926, American socialist and labour leader Eugene Debs died. He helped found both the American Railway Union and the Industrial Workers of the World, and was jailed in 1919 for his opposition to World War I. While in prison he ran for president, and received nearly 1,000,000 votes.
