On this day, 14 June 1991, up to half a million women in Switzerland took part in a nationwide women’s strike demanding legal enforcement of gender equality which was incorporated into the federal constitution on 14 June 1981. Of primary concern was the continuing pay differential between men and women.
Women walked out again on the same date in 2011, and in 2019 women in Switzerland again went on strike demanding better recognition and remuneration for care work, and end to sexual harassment and action against wage inequality.
Women in Switzerland earn around 20% less than men on average, and 40% of this pay differential cannot be explained by factors like men and women working different jobs. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1450921698426309/?type=3
