June 3 2020 - More than 4.000 people marched today in Athens, Greece at the US Embassy for the murder of George Floyd by the police in Minneapolis and in solidarity to the US Rebellion taking place right now in towns and cities across the USA.

When the demo reached the fortified American Embassy in central Athens, anarchists attacked the riot police brigades guarding the building. [video]

I wonder if these seemingly “progressive” Greeks give a shit about the mistreatment of the minorities in their country, particularly the Albanian and Roma people, considering that there have been Albanians who were brutalized and killed by the Greek police. I wonder what they’re doing to recognize the Cham Albanian genocide. I wonder what they’re doing to fight against the rampant neo-nazism and white-supremacy in Greece. I wonder what they’re doing to fight against organizations like Mavi and Golden Dawn. I wonder what they’re doing to fight against Megali Idea and Vorio Epirus that are still a thing most Greeks actually believe in. Where are these progressive Greek anti-fascists and anti-racists when it’s Greeks being fascists and racists?

That’s a good question for Europe in general, too. With the high anti-immigrant sentiments across the continent, as well as our continuous mistreatment and abuse of Roma people and other minorities.

Yeah exactly. And this is hardly a US and European problem either. Human rights abuse is a problem all over the world. In Canada and Latin America they mistreat Black and Indigenous people. In Asian countries they have many many problems too. While I don’t know muchh about the history and politics of African countries I’m sure that there many problems there too. My country is not innocent either since we have a Roma minority that definitely face structural and institutional racism.

The reason why I commented here is can most people don’t realize just how dangerous Greek politics are. The word doesn’t know that the reaosn why Greece is “homogenous” is because of the genocide, assimilation and for ed expulsion of non-Greek people. The reason why Greece and Turkey are so seemingly “homogenous” (they are far from homogenous) is precisely because of the population exchange. Not to mention of immigrants are bei treated there to this day.

Fascism and white-supremacy have been a thing in Greece ever since the country was created. Nobody cares or acknowledges the genocide they commited agaisnt Albanians and how Albanians are treated there to this day. There have been Albanians who have gotten “in trouble” with the police just for speaking Albanian. There are even scary cases where Albanins misteriously disappeared and were later found dead. Sometimes they even stage it to look like a suicide or accidental. In Greek media they still openly mention “Viro Epirus” and if the idea that “Epirus is Greek” does not come directly from Greek ultranationalists.

To be fair, the people in this protest are EXACTLY the Greeks who do care about that stuff. These are the radical leftists that organize squats to house refugees and fight fascists in the streets. I do very much understand and agree with your frustration with liberal Europeans being outraged about the US, while ignoring the bigotry at home. It’s just that it is misdirected when you aim it at (most of) the people in this specific protest.

@tragicallyphosphorescent @viiscaria for some recent context on the situation in Greece and the role anarchists play in trying to house and defend refugees there https://crimethinc.com/2020/05/15/greece-repression-and-resistance-during-the-pandemic

and since you specifically asked what they did in response to Golden Dawn, here’s some Greek anarchists smashing up their office with axes and sledgehammers.
