On this day, 29 May 1972 the Dalit Panthers were formed in Maharashtra, India. Modelled on the US Black Panthers the Dalit Panthers was formed to combat caste discrimination. Dalit means “oppressed” or “broken” in Sanskrit, and refers to members of lower castes in India. The socialist group was most active during the 1970s and 80s.
