The general derivation would be from a guard on a watchtower spotting enemy forces with plenty of time to rouse the defense - a failure on his watch means the enemy has the advantage of surprise.

I’m commenting from my pow which is marked from being from a third world country that’s suffering heavily from devaluation of currency. We are in lockdown bc we can’t afford the crisis of our health system which is free and public but at the same time economy is dying. USA economic crisis can’t say nothing to ours :/
