On this day, 1 May 1903, the first May Day (International Workers’ Day) demonstration took place in the Philippines organised by the Unión Obrera Democrática Filipina, the country’s first true labour union which was formed the previous year. In 1908, the government agreed to designate 1 May as Labour day, an official national holiday.
