On this day, 26 April 1937, the ancient Basque city of Guernica was bombed and largely obliterated by the German and Italian air forces at the behest of the Spanish nationalists during the Civil War and Revolution, killing many.
It was one of the first examples of aerial bombardment of civilians in a conflict, and was famously depicted in Picasso’s painting, Guernica, a copy of which now hangs by the UN Security Council.
Possibly the world’s most famous anti-war art work, it was covered by officials when Colin Powell was due to speak about the Iraq war in 2003.
In this podcast with Revolutionary Left Radio we tell the story of the Spanish civil war: https://workingclasshistory.com/2018/07/29/spanish-civil-war-podcast/ https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1410356592482820/?type=3
