Conspiracy theorists at one time were primarily concerned with attracting new converts to the “red-pilled” universe. But these days, they’re actually more often concerned with competing among one another for having the hottest new theory gaining the most attention from other conspiracists.
Take the latest far-right conspiracy theory—namely, that COVID-19 is a product of a nefarious plot by the Seattle-based Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, and a laboratory run by the Chinese government, and a data dump of emails from employees of these outfits proves it. It’s probably just recirculated data from previous hacks—but that matters little to people who care more about the buzz they create.
