On this day, 13 April 1919, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place in Amritsar, India, when British troops opened fire on a crowd of predominantly Sikh pilgrims, murdering up to 1000 or more people and injuring many more.
As well as pilgrims, there were large numbers of Muslims and Hindus, many of whom were farmers, traders and merchants attending a horse and cattle fair. The youngest victim was just six weeks old.
The killings were not reported in Britain until December that year, and no one charged with any offence. The incident sparked widespread outrage and led to the non-cooperation movement which began the following year.
In 1940 an Indian independence activist, who was wounded in the massacre, assassinated the Lieutenant Governor who was responsible, and was subsequently executed.
