On this day, 22 March 1910, a “Robin Hood” gang of revolutionary bank robbers in Ukraine were illegally sentenced to death by hanging. As the group had not killed anyone, according to the law the death penalty should not have applied.
One of the group was a young anarchist called Nestor Makhno. Fortunately for him, his parents had falsified his date of birth, making it look like he was still a minor. His sentence was later commuted to a lifetime of hard labour.
He was freed in the February revolution of 1917.
