The RCMP was established for the purpose of rounding up Native peoples and forcing them onto reservations. One of the main jobs of the Canadian Mounties in the late 1800s was to seize Native children from their families and accompany them to residential schools to be physically and mentally abused. The legacy has serious ramifications today - and as an article published in the Guardian on December 20 revealed, not much has changed.
