On this day, 4 March 1919, Canadian troops in the British Army awaiting demobilisation (return home) in Kinmel Park, Wales mutinied. 15,000 men were stranded at the camp, in overcrowded, good autumn squalid conditions, on only half rations and having received no pay in over a month.
When the camp commander went to Rhyl for an evening out, tempers exploded. The soldiers looted camp supplies and sergeants’ messes, and started fires. They managed to grab a few rifles, and improvised other makeshift weapons by attaching razors to handles.
Officers and loyal soldiers were armed to repress the riot, and arrested 20 mutineers. But other soldiers simply broke them free.
Eventually officers opened fire, and regained control of the camp by 4:30 AM the next day. The events left three rioters and two guards dead, 78 were arrested and 25 convicted of mutiny and sentenced to up to 10 years’ imprisonment.
But military authorities then massively accelerated demobilisation of the men.
