On this day, 9 December 1987, the uprising of Palestinians against Israeli occupation which became known as the ‘First Intifada’ began. Palestinians took part in a general strike, refused to pay Israeli taxes, boycotted Israeli insitutions and rioted in disturbances which would last into the early 1990s.
