On this day, 5 December 2008, the mostly Latinx workers at the Republic Windows and Doors manufacturer in Chicago began their sit down strike against lay-offs without compensation. The strike was one of the first to occur in the fallout of the 2008 financial crisis and won widespread support. The strike ended with compensation and all staff keeping their jobs.
