Today is Thanksgiving in the United States, or a National Day of Mourning for Native Americans in New England, or “Unthanksgiving Day” for some Native Americans on the West Coast. It commemorates pilgrims and Wampanoag people sharing an autumn harvest feast. However the colonists ultimately repaid the Native people by nearly wiping them out in centuries of atrocities and genocide.
Indigenous criticism of the colonial narrative of Thanksgiving is presumably the reason for President Donald Trump claiming there is a “war on Thanksgiving”. But conversely many liberal commentators over the last couple of days have attempted to erase this critique of Thanksgiving, arguing that all Americans love Thanksgiving.
We believe today is a good opportunity to reflect on the genocide against Native Americans, and learn about the resistance to it.
