The sacrifice of a boar, on a cup from the Athens region, ca. 500 BCE. Ancient Greeks ate meat, but it often came from religious sacrifices (it seems the gods rarely wanted the meat from the animals sacrificed to them). Sheep and goats were the most commonly sacrificed animals, although pigs, cows, birds, and dogs were killed too.
