A giant raft of rock floating in the Pacific could help heal Australia's Great Barrier Reef

A pumice "raft" the size of Manhattan is drifting towards Australia, bringing along with it new marine life that could help with the recovery of the Great Barrier Reef's corals that have seen rapid deterioration in recent years due to climate change.

Due to an underwater volcanic eruption, a massive raft of pumice (around the size of Manhattan) is currently floating in the middle of the ocean. It’s expected to read Australia in the next 7-10 months.

This could be good news for the Great Barrier Reef, because events like this can spread sea life from one place to another. Porous stones like pumice can carry crabs, microorganisms, and even young coral, which could re-seed parts of the reef and introduce new genetics.
