Have you ever read Fire on the Mountain by Bisson? Its an alternate history book about Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry succeeding with help from Tubman. It starts a massive revolution and slaves free themselves. They create a socialist nation in the South. Following their example, the Paris Commune survives, the Russian and Irish revolutions come early and by the 50s, the world is a socialist utopia about to land a man on mars.
