Egan Orion is this election’s business candidate for city council in Seattle’s District 3. He is supported by the Seattle Chamber, somehow, even after leading the Capitol Hill Chamber into ruin.

As the business candidate, Egan is of course a white man. And like all the best white men, he has colonialist ambitions. The third-generation Seattleite has a lot to live up to, since his ancestors already did the hard work of taking land from the Duwamish people and excluding non-whites from their neighborhoods through exclusionary zoning and redlining.

Since there is no land left for the taking, Egan Orion decided to focus on colonizing the bodies of women of color.

Last October, Egan posted on Facebook: “SEEKING EGG DONOR — COMPENSATED.” Understand, there is nothing inherently wrong with this. Many people choose to pursue genetic donors, surrogacy, or fertility treatments. I am in no position to judge those choices.

The problem was Egan’s particular request:

Egan is treating race like a designer brand. That’s not even subtext, it’s his stated purpose. He’s looking for a boutique “Benetton” baby: the appearance of diverse heritage without apparent cultural or social considerations. It’s “fine” to be a little black? Thank you, master! For someone “partially” Native American, what blood quantum is acceptable, pray tell?

This is a gross, dehumanizing, and overwhelmingly white and privileged way to label and use women of color. This ranks alongside disgusting incels who rank women by their physical features. Egan even finds a way to sneak a no fatties clause in there with his “small to medium build” requirement.

Why does he do this? What is his justification? Because reasons. No, literally, he says “reasons” for why he’s selecting race categories like he’s building a poké bowl.

Egan Orion is not the “celebrate diversity” candidate he portrays himself as. His approach to race and gender is problematic and gross, at best. The fact that his post is still active shows that he doesn’t even see what’s wrong with it — and he doesn’t surround himself with people willing to tell him.

But what do you expect from the white male business candidate.

Now does seem like a perfect time to remind people that Orion has only gotten as far as he has because he’s bought and paid for by Amazon, and that his opponent for the District 3 run is a socialist immigrant woman of color
