Photo by @amivitale Lions that were released and collared in a remote region of a 4,500 square kilometer Zambeze Delta area of Mozambique, feast on an antelope. They were part of an ambitious introduction of 24 lions from South Africa, the largest international translocation ever undertaken. It is estimated that that the population could grow to as many as 500 within 15 years, Already, 20 cubs have been born. A hundred years ago, there were over 200,000 wild lions living in Africa. Today, leading researchers estimate the population to be 20,000 or less, with lions now extinct in 26 African countries. Mozambique’s wildlife was decimated by the country’s civil war and subsequent poaching in the last 20 years. This particular ecosystem has made a remarkable recovery except for its lions. This historic translocation might mark the point that the lions reversed their fate in Mozambique. #Wild #Nature #Wildlife #Lion #Lions #Delta #Animals #Igs_Africa #Wildeyesa #Endangered #Mozambique #Zambeze #SouthAfrica
