On this day, 12 September 2001, Spanish militant textile worker Dolores Prat died aged 96. A lifelong revolutionary, she fought for the 8-hour day from her teens, participated in the Spanish revolution and following its defeat escaped to France, where she and her family were first interned in a concentration camp, then deported back to Spain. Fortunately, she managed to escape almost-certain death by climbing back over the Pyrenees to France, eventually finding work in a quarry. She remained active with the CNT union in Excel, and aged 91 she began actively supporting undocumented migrants (sans papiers). Each year since 1996, a group of people have followed her route from Catalonia to France across the mountains.
