On this day, 20 August 1948 workers for the African Wharfage Company (AWC) in Zanzibar City struck for higher wages. Due to intimidation by the British authorities (what is now Tanzania was then a colony of the British Empire) the strike won the sympathy of many other workers on the island. A general strike developed that paralysed the city and much of the island’s economy. The strike lasted until September 13th when the company gave in on wage increases and improved working conditions. A detailed account of the strike can be found here: http://libcom.org/history/1948-zanzibar-city-general-strike https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1192026954315786/?type=3
