On this day, 14 August 1945 the August Revolution began in Vietnam against the French colonial regime. Within two weeks the insurgency had been successful across the whole country, and Vietnam announced a declaration of independence, based on that written by the Americans in 1776: “All men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” However the Americans weren’t happy about this. They funded French efforts to retake the country, and later invaded themselves.
