On this day, 9 July 1917, anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, were sentenced to serve two years in prison, to pay fines of $10,000 each, and deportation to Russia at the expiration of their prison terms for violating conscription law during World War I. US Marshal McCarthy stated: “This marks the beginning of the end of Anarchism in New York.”
