Do you know

that Yakutian horse is not just one but four breeds? I learned about this just recently and currently try to find more information.

I only know three sub-types of the Yakut horse!

Northern type— purest bred of the Yakut; very minimal if any cross breeding with “big” stallions reaching 13.3hh

Smaller Southern type— seems to be similar in blood purity to the Northern but are noticeably smaller with average height being 13.0hh. They’re considered less valuable among the Yakut because of their size.

Larger Southern type— result of a lot of cross breeding and isn’t “pure”. Crossed with other local breeds; Suntar, Megezh and Olekminsk. Stallions tend to be around 14.0hh.

That’s my limited info based off access to American search engine results 😂. It’s rough getting to Russian language websites if I don’t already know the website’s address.

The Yakut people also milk their mares for human consumption of milk! Which is just a neat piece of info.

After some research, I managed to found some scientific papers by Yakutian Agricultural Research Institute where it’s said that there are three breeds of horses in Yakutia.

First one is, of course, Yakutian Horse. This breed has three types:

Indigenous type is the most common, widely distributed through whole Yakutia. Horses of this type are smaller and slender. Main colours are dun and grey of different shades, also there are roan, bay, chestnut, piebald, and rarely appaloosa horses. This type was the founder of two other types.

Kolyma type is bred in valleys of Kolyma and Alazeya Rivers. These horses are the largest and most massive of all Yakutian Horses, with a large head and big body. The main colour is grey of different shades.

Yana type is bred in the valleys of Yana and Indigirka Rivers. These horses by their size are in the middle between Ingenious and Kolyma types. They are mostly grey and dun, roan also happens in this type.

Two other breeds from Yakutia just recently were fourth and fifth types of Yakutian Horse but in 2010 they were separated as two new breeds.

Mezheg Horse breed (previously the Mezheg type) originated in crossbreeding of Yakutian Horse in XIX century with Kusnetzk Horse (a light draught horse breed created in XVIII century in the north of West Siberian mountains) and later in the fifties of XX century with Russian Draft Horse. These horses are larger than any other type or breed of Yakutia and can reach 600 kg in weight. Main colours are dun, roan, bay, grey. They are mainly bred in Nyurbinsky and Suntarsky Districts of Yakutia in Stud Farm n.a. Stepan Vasilyev.

Prilenskaya Horse breed (previously the Enlarged type) was created by crossbreeding Yakutyan Horse with Orlov Trotter and Russian Draft Horse in purpose to get a strong and endurable horse for Yamschik and post services. This breed is smaller than Mezheg Horse but larger than Yakutian Horse. They have a long body and high withers, which makes them best suited of all local breeds for driving harness. They are bred in West and Central Yakutia. Main colours are dun, bay, roan, chestnut, piebald, and grey of different shades.

All Yakutian breeds of horses are traditionally milked (it’s the thing of horse cultures throughout whole Northern Asia) and also they are raised for meat. All three breeds are listed as meat breeds in the documents. Yakutian Horse produces marble meat that even goes to export. Horse skins are used in making mukluks and clothes, horse fat is used in traditional medicine.
