Radio Blue Heart is on the air!
Hello! Just wondering if you have any tips on raising a cactus? I've never been the mother of a plant before and I'm very worried for Tiffany (her full name is Theophania Sophronia Imogen 1). What should I be looking for/how will I know if she's not doing well?

I am the WRONG person to ask this. I’ve killed every cactus I’ve ever had.

I gotchu.

Cacti Care

Cacti care differs dependent on the type of Cacti. I’m going to break them down into 4 categories for you.

Category One - Typical Cacti

Anything that looks like these need to be watered once a week, regardless of how big or small they are. They do well in both high and moderate sunlight, but should be in some sort of sunlight. They also need to be planted in rocks or gravel for drainage. In the winter, water them every other week. Fertilize them when you fertilize your other plants.

Category Two - Thicc Boys.

These cacti should not be treated like cactic they should be treated like normal plants. They need to be watered twice a week in the summer and once a week in the winter. They need lots of sunlight! They do not need rocks for drainage, but beware of dry soil. If the soil is dry, they need to be watered.

Category Three - Air Plants

Air plants are considered cacti! They do not live and soil like the other types of cacti or plants do. You can put them anywhere and they’ll do well, but they need to be soaked once a week. Fully immerse them in a bowl of water and leave them over night or for several hours. Drip dry them before putting them away.

Category Four - Terrariums

These do not need to be watered, but need to be spritzed weekly or biweekly dependent on what types of cacti are in them. Covered glass terrariums (pictured all the way to the right) however, do not need to be watered at all, plants survive off of sunlight and condensation. Make sure that if you buy a terrarium it has gravel or rocks for drainage visible on the top and bottom. It’s okay if there’s a layer of sand or dirt between them, don’t buy terrariums with no gravel on top. A lot of terrariums will be very pretty looking but aren’t built correctly and are death traps for plants!
