 “For 20 years Schwob and Malherbe lived and worked together on the Channel Island of Jersey. There, they produced a vast collection of photographs, almost exclusively of themselves, in which they toyed obsessively with ideas of identity and gender.
When the Nazis invaded Jersey in 1940, the pair put their fondness for assuming different identities to good use. With great bravery - as well as considerable glee - they managed to convince the Germans that what was just a two-woman resistance movement was actually a complex underground organisation consisting of several hundred members.”
