I stared at the light, transfixed, until it was all I could see, until it filled the inside of my skull and carved a new space between my eyes. I stared until everything made sense. And I could see, I could see in ways described on the walls of these pyramids, ways even Chloe couldn’t comprehend – the ways that the gods had wanted us to see.
“Kris?” Chloe’s voice warbled distantly. It felt like she was miles away, even though I felt her breath against my collarbone. She wasn’t cloaked in the light like I was. I could only keep a hand on her – a hand that was growing too small for the confines of its skin – as I tilted my face into the light.
Reality swirled in prismatic colors around me, in the soft reds and purples of Chloe’s clothes, in the black of her skin and in her brown curls. She looked at me, and her mouth fell open. “Kris…”
I smiled at her, feeling teeth fill my mouth, and then laughed. I had laughed many times before in my life, but not to this extent. Not until it strained my vocal cords and I sang it to the sky, to the beings that had now turned their attention to us as they crawled and slithered and tumbled down the pyramids so brazenly, as if no one would notice, nothing would harm them.
I pushed Chloe back, my hand rough, my strength no longer my own. My bones started to shift, expanding and pushing back, jaws pushing outward, my teeth sinking into the cold wind around me. Muscles bloomed across my chest and torso. I let out a sound that could have rent the air in two, and those stinking creatures looked back at me.
