On this day, 14 June 2001, the Algerian “Black Spring” rebellion peaked as nearly a million demonstrators marched in Algiers. The uprising began two months before. after the police murder of a young man and swept the country - Amazigh people (commonly but derogatorily known as Berber) in Kabylie and elsewhere demanding democratic and cultural rights.
