On this day, 13 June 2009 in Iran, following the re-election of President Ahmadinejad, protests and riots broke out in several major cities sparking a wider movement which provoked the most serious political crisis for the regime in decades. The movement peaked two days later, with millions taking to the streets - previously almost unheard of in the authoritarian state. Eventually it was suppressed by government violence and repression, but sporadic protests continued until the end of July.
