On this day, 8 June 1961, 19-year-old Joan Mulholland was one of a group of Freedom Riders who were arrested in Jackson, Mississippi. After participating in numerous sit-ins against segregated restaurants, Mulholland joined the Freedom Riders, a group who fought government non-enforcement of the ban on segregation in public transport in the US South by riding in multiracial groups, often. Two years later, Mulholland was travelling with four other activists in Mississippi when their car was attacked by the KKK, who had orders to kill them. Fortunately they managed to escape, so the Klan instead murdered three other activists: James Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman. Mulholland remains active to this day.
