20-year-old horses aren’t supposed to look like they had two legs in the grave.

Pass it on.

He’s 30:

I’m here for the super seniors! (20, 19, 20)

I love this post. I love this post so much.

I love shifting away from letting horses be in poor condition because of the antiquated idea that they are “too old” to be otherwise and toward rethinking what a senior horse could and should look like. It can and often does take a fair bit more money, more effort, solid husbandry knowledge, and a big dose of creativity to keep a senior as sound and fit as possible. But you know what? I find it so rewarding! Even on the tough days.  😊

I had doubts I could ever get a mare with some fused lumbar vertebrae, sacroiliac joint arthritis, and bad hocks to ever look and feel good again, but man… So proud of my 23yo mare!  💪

(And a big nod to the barn owner, because this totally would not have been possible without her killer feed program.)

23 and in (almost) full work after recovering from a tendon injury - her owner does everything in her power to keep her healthy and happy and it definitely pays off
[sorry for the blurry picture]

Bob (26) and Moniq (20) :D

When I was given Jet two years ago, I honestly thought he was only 10. According to my vet and what I’ve been able to piece together of his history, he actually turns 20 this year!

image

This is the best picture I have of Chai at the moment, but he’s 23! He’s semi-retired (occasionally goes for trail rides with my dad but that’s about it) because he has some hock and stifle arthritis and only ever wants to gallop or canter when you get on him because he was a barrel and pole horse most of his life, but he’s still sound, comfortable, and very much enjoys being mostly a pasture puff lol. He’s a rescue and he deserves it at this point.
