On this day, 16 May 1944, thousands of Roma detainees at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp rose up in rebellion rather than be taken to the gas chambers. They fought back against soldiers with stones, iron pipes, wood panels, barbed wire and smuggled pikes. They managed to repel an attack by 100 German soldiers. Later the heavily armed Germans regrouped and attacked again, but they still suffered casualties and eventually the attack was called off and the extermination postponed. Half of the 6000 detainees were shipped to other camps, and the remainder were murdered on 2 August. In commemoration of the uprising, May 16 is European Romani Resistance Day.
