On this day, 16 May 1966, seamen across the UK walked out on a nationwide strike for the first time in half a century. Holding solid for seven weeks, they won a reduction in working hours from 56 to 48 per week. But many workers were unhappy as they wished to return to the 44 hour week the union negotiated away in 1965, but the union did not ask for solidarity action and the Trades Union Congress instructed other unions not to support the seamen. This is a detailed account of the dispute from a participant: http://libcom.org/library/seamen-strike-1966-foulser

  5. howeveragain said: I started at sea as a Cadet in 1972 so joined the Merchant Navy and Airline Officer’s Association. Which in time became NUMAST, the Nautilus an after amalgamation with the Dutch Officer’s union Nautilus UK, so I was never in the NUS. However I do remember meeting NUS members who were bitter about the strike. I also note the author’s began R170***. They were issued sequentially and mine wasR910653 so he must have been fairly old even in 1966.
