On this day, 11 May 1910, revolutionary Emiliano Zapata’s peasant army began the Battle of Cuautla during the Mexican Revolution. Despite suffering hundreds of losses, the Zapatistas took the town 8 days later, and the defeat convinced the dictator Porfirio Díaz to step down.
