Long before the alecani left their ancestral home, the pylura and the Venandi Empire were in a constant state of conflict. The big cats of the Empire saw the pylura as inferior due to their diminutive size, and considered them more akin to prey than fellow cats. They were kept as slaves, preventing them from joining the empire as a distinct tribe of their own. Not only were they used as labor, but also for cruel bloodsport, and as food. Venandi society was a strict caste system, with pylura at the bottom.  The arrival of the Alecani changed everything.
