On this day, 18 April 2001, police in Kabylie, Algeria, murdered a young man named Massinissa sparking a nationwide uprising which became known as the “Black Spring”. Following the killing, protests and riots broke out across the country, demanding democratic rights and cultural rights for Berber people. The rebellion was only quelled after police killed upwards of 120 people. This is a short article about the uprising written by a participant at the time: http://bit.ly/2IrUV2c http://bit.ly/2XrbYox
