On this day, 17 April 1943, black students from Howard University staged a sit-in at the Little Palace Cafeteria, a segregated restaurant in Washington DC. One of the organisers of this and other sit-ins in the city at the time was Pauli Murray, a young African-American activist and feminist who identified as part female and part male, whose only significant romantic relationships were with women. Murray helped organise another sit in the following year until the University ordered its students to desist. DC eventually banned segregation in restaurants in 1953.
