Statue of Maya and Merit
Double statue of Maya and his wife Merit waiting for a sacrificial meal and wearing their finest clothing. Maya was the Overseer of the Treasury under Tutankhamun, Ay, and Horemheb. The statue was meant to be a dwelling for their Ka, a complicated concept in Ancient Egyptian religion, which can be associated with the western concept of the soul.
New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, ca. 1325 BC. Now in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden.
