Inktober 2019 #11 & 12: Petition

missed yesterday’s post because of game night so today’s 2 illustrations

sometimes the gods answer your questions like, fucking immediately, and it’s kind of the worst!  anyway this happened like 4 years ago so I’m more ok to talk about it than I was, but drawing this was still harder than I’d thought it would be!  my relationship to my faith is very personal but i’m also kemetic pagan and an artist so if i’m not occasionally drawing angsty comics about personal spiritual experiences what’s even the point, right?

Alexa Kasdan had a cold and a sore throat.

The 40-year-old public policy consultant from Brooklyn, N.Y., didn’t want her upcoming vacation trip ruined by strep throat. So after it had lingered for more than a week, she decided to get it checked out.

Kasdan visited her primary care physician, Roya Fathollahi, at Manhattan Specialty Care just off Park Avenue South and not far from tony Gramercy Park.

The visit was quick. Kasdan got her throat swabbed, gave a tube of blood and was sent out the door with a prescription for antibiotics.

She soon felt better, and the trip went off without a hitch.

Then the bill came.

Patient: Alexa Kasdan, 40, a public policy consultant in New York City, insured by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota through her partner’s employer.

Total bill: $28,395.50 for an out-of-network throat swab. Her insurer cut a check for $25,865.24.

For Her Head Cold, Insurer Coughed Up $25,865

On this day, 22 December 1946, bisexual Black liberation activist Kuwasi Balagoon was born in the United States. He became active in the Black Panther Party in the 1960s, and was later arrested and put on trial as part of the notorious Panther 21 case, who were all later acquitted. He later joined the urban guerrilla group the Black Liberation Army, and was imprisoned and escaped various times.
He was eventually convicted and jailed for life for participation in the Brinks robbery. Balagoon kept up his radical activity in prison, authoring a number of texts, until his death from AIDS-related illness in 1986.
We have made available a compilation of text by and about him in our online store: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/books/products/a-soldiers-story-kuwasi-balagoon https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1300760813442399/?type=3
