Several ‘Best’ U.S. Hospitals Penalized Over Too-High Rates Of Infection, Injury

Hundreds of hospitals across the U.S., including a number with sterling reputations for cutting-edge care, will be paid less by Medicare after the federal government pronounced that they had higher rates of infections and patient injuries than others.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on Wednesday identified 786 hospitals that will receive lower payments for a year under the Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program, a creation of the Affordable Care Act. The penalties are designed to encourage better care without taking the extreme step of tossing a hospital out of the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which would drive most hospitals out of business.

The birth of movie merchandising

The Lost World is believed to be one of the first films to have a product tie-in. The movie was released in 1925, at the height of a “puzzle craze” in the United States, and plans were quickly drawn up to bring the two together.

While today we are all too familiar with the merchandising associated with films (usually the big blockbusters) watching the sincere and up front use of it in The Lost World’s promo film is almost sweet compared to today’s more subtle and sneaky product placement. Today, even films that don’t seem like they’d lend themselves naturally to merchandising still seem to find a way.

On this day, 31 January 1957, 350 Jewish bagel bakers in New York City went on strike. At first, bagel truck drivers did not strike with them, however bakers slashed tires, hijacked trucks, stole keys and appealed to drivers to join them until they agreed.
They were joined on strike by 385 workers at the Pechter Baking Company.
The bakers remained out for 33 days until the city’s 34 bakeries agreed to improved pay and benefits for the strikers.

Cassandra Peterson stars in the 1988 horror-comedy as her horror hostess alter ego, Elvira, and co-wrote the script with Sam Egan (The Outer Limits) and John Paragon (Pee-wee’s Playhouse).

James Signorelli (Saturday Night Live) directs. W. Morgan Sheppard, Daniel Greene, Jeff Conaway, Susan Kellermann, and Edie McClurg round out the cast.
