“As much fear as I had about a dude in a rubber suit because that’s what it was, a guy in a rubber suit, essentially, with some remote controls and that sort of thing. As much fear as I had about that, that fear was alleviated by the end of the movie. When that big rubber thing is lying on the ground, and Brigitte has tears running down her face and I just realised in that moment, shooting with Emily, when you know - right at the end of the schedule, second last shot of the movie, um, she’s - tears running down her face, I realised it didn’t matter because the emotion that shows on her, the journey that we’ve been through and that her face is streaming tears is everything that sold all of that. That sells everything. It didn’t matter at that point if the make up was unbelievably good or unbelievably bad, what mattered was the sort of hurt soul of those characters. I was so moved when we shot that sequence with Emily and what she did there, and I just realised all my fears about the rubber suit and the make up effects and all that stuff were just alleviated because it didn’t matter anymore.”

An Idea To Prevent A Nuclear War

“My suggestion was quite simple: Put that needed code number in a little capsule, and then implant that capsule right next to the heart of a volunteer. The volunteer would carry with him a big, heavy butcher knife as he accompanied the President. If ever the President wanted to fire nuclear weapons, the only way he could do so would be for him first, with his own hands, to kill one human being. The President says, “George, I’m sorry but tens of millions must die.” He has to look at someone and realize what death is—what an innocent death is. Blood on the White House carpet. It’s reality brought home.”
- Fisher, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (1981)

this leaves out the best part of the above quote:

“When I suggested this to friends in the Pentagon they said, ‘My God, that’s terrible. Having to kill someone would distort the President’s judgment. He might never push the button.”

On this day, 23 January 1982 all Formula One Grand Prix drivers apart from two went on strike in South Africa, barricading themselves in a room, in protest at new “superlicence” conditions. The new licences would tie drivers to three year contracts, and worst of all would forbid any criticism of their governing body the FIA, with a penalty of a lifetime ban if they did so. They were fined, but the new licences were withdrawn. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.1819457841572691/2193194437532361/?type=3
